• I started playing around with "water panning" last year, a technique which involves a semi-slow shutter speed and camera movement following moving water. While this kind of creative exploration was put on the back burner during the sailing season, I had to opportunity to try it once again recently!

It was one of the very comfortable and sunny autumn days early this October, and I found myself at Second Beach in Newport, RI. I used my super dark B+W #110 filter to capture the movement while the sun was still up, and I was very happy with the results! The other panning abstracts I had tried involved more of a pastel dusk or pink cloud type of color palette, but this time I was able to capture more deep yellows and golds with the sunlight.

 • With the technique known as water panning, the camera moves for a fraction of a second with the wave as it forms. This slightly longer shutter speed can create some beautiful smooth effects as the wave builds and moves towards the shoreline. This was captured during dusk hours at Second Beach in Newport. Not all waves are dark and powerful. Some are merely ripples. Water has so many personalities you can never turn your back on her, but she will always surprise you with her grace and awesome beauty.

 • I didn't want my winter photography to become stale. As exciting as it is getting up before the sun in the dead of winter, I needed a new project to work on. This is called water panning, where the camera moves for a fraction of a second with the wave as it forms. This slightly longer shutter speed can create some beautiful smooth effects as the wave builds and moves towards the shoreline.
This was my first attempt at the technique, during dusk hours at Second Beach in Newport. I was hooked and I loved how I was able to capture more than just an image of the wave, but it's energy as well.

 • I wanted to create something something a little bit different with my seascapes. So on one nondescript early winter day, I found time to go to the beach and photograph this water abstract.

 • I made visits to the beach recently to try and practice the art of incorporating motion into still seascapes. The evening presented with pale pastels at dusk, giving my frame some pinks and purples to hold on to. I think I've got the hang of it, and I started to even incorporate more beach into the frame. Now I just have to find more variety and try this technique during stormy gray days, brilliant sunny days, with super long "strokes" with the camera, shorter exposures with people within the frame... The possibilities are endless!

 • The waves at Los Cerritos came rolling in on a sunny and warm March afternoon. The winter waves in Baja aren't necessarily their best of the year, but they still offer surfers a terrific ride with a dramatic mountainous backdrop.
