• I made visits to the beach in the late winter months to try and practice the art of incorporating motion into still seascapes. The evening presented with pale pastels at dusk, giving my frame some pinks and purples to hold on to. I think I've got the hang of it, and I started to even incorporate more beach into the frame. Now I just have to find more variety and try this technique during stormy gray days, brilliant sunny days, with super long "strokes" with the camera, shorter exposures with people within the frame... The possibilities are endless!

 • At the southern end of the Parque Nacionale de Cabo Pulmo, a fifteen minute walk to the point from Playa Arbolito presents an other-worldly landscape of rocky formations and tidal waters. Photographing here one sunset, I could easily spend an entire lifetime exploring all the photographic possibilities of this location!

 • With the technique known as water panning, the camera moves for a fraction of a second with the wave as it forms. This slightly longer shutter speed can create some beautiful smooth effects as the wave builds and moves towards the shoreline. This was captured during dusk hours at Second Beach in Newport. Not all waves are dark and powerful. Some are merely ripples. Water has so many personalities you can never turn your back on her, but she will always surprise you with her grace and awesome beauty.

 • Hurricane Sandy has eroded many beaches in Rhode Island, and the old pillons of the ferry pier from the late 1800s boardwalk which once lined Narragansett Beach before it historically burned down, are now much more exposed post-hurricane. They are now visible at low tide, and even part of the brick foundation of a nearby building are exposed as well.

 • A quick stop for a winter sunset at the beach in Quononchontaug, Charlestown, Rhode Island

 • Wintery tide pools in Narragansett, Rhode Island, with a rising full moon on the horizon. Winter had arrived and many of the tidepools were dry with seaweed covered fragments of ice that had broken as the day melted and refrozen as the chill set back in. But this deeper pool still contained water. It was quiet and gently reflecting the Belt of Venus in the sky, that band of blue-pink-blue that appears after sunset. The moon began to rise and make it's appearance. Luckily, with no wind to speak of, the tidepool remained still like glass and the quiet winter made its presence known. I put on another coat and waited for the right moment when the moon would reflect just right.

 • Over 6 months since my first visit to a new seascape location, I had only 30 minutes to take shots, 15 minutes before and after sunset. With a low and slightly incoming tide and wispy clouds that underlit at just the right moment, I captured this calm seascape with receding water pulling itself back into the crystal clear ocean. These ocean vistas never cease to amaze me with their beauty.

 • I didn't want my winter photography to become stale. As exciting as it is getting up before the sun in the dead of winter, I needed a new project to work on. This is called water panning, where the camera moves for a fraction of a second with the wave as it forms. This slightly longer shutter speed can create some beautiful smooth effects as the wave builds and moves towards the shoreline.

This was my first attempt at the technique, during dusk hours at Second Beach in Newport. I was hooked and I loved how I was able to capture more than just an image of the wave, but it's energy as well.

 • A view from Payne's dock during sunset looking north over New Harbor in Block Island. There is a debate about the best time to visit Block Island. In summer its population swells and it becomes a bustling tourist location, but in autumn the town quiets, the days are still warm, and the entire atmosphere changes.

 • Here on Kid's Beach, the southern end of Fred Benson Beach located near the port of Old Harbor, dusk provides a new lighting perspective of pale colors and calm tones. While this beach is overflowing with beach-goers in the summer time, it's a sparse and quiet landscape in the off season.
